Listen to this episode:
On this week’s “Bitcoin Magazine Podcast” episode, Christian Keroles sat down with Andy Edstrom and Peter McCormack to discuss their latest post Bitcoin Magazine “Win hearts and minds for Bitcoin.”
Both McCormack and Edstrom believe that Bitcoin is inevitable and has already won, but it can be easier or more difficult to accept this fact depending on how Bitcoin evangelists teach. They believe that through rhetoric and appeals to the moral foundations theory, Bitcoin evangelists can better explain to skeptics and newcomers the many positive effects of Bitcoin’s adoption.
The theory of moral foundations is a theory of how people make decisions and create attitudes about things. The theory has a strong influence on the book “Righteous Mind”, which is the inspiration for the article.
The foundations of the theory of moral foundations are:
- Care / damage
- Fairness / fraud
- Loyalty / Treason
- Authority / subversion
- Holiness / humiliation
- Freedom / oppression.
In the article, the authors apply this mental model to mining and energy consumption.
“Bitcoiners need to educate people about this issue and avoid starting passively on their backfoot. If you are speaking to someone who studies the impact of Bitcoin on the environment, it may be useful to start by asking, “Can you please explain to me how we can beat global warming without Bitcoin?” (That is, defend your damn sticks arguments and I’ll answer with my bitcoin carrot.) “
