The venture arm of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a global agency providing humanitarian and development assistance to children worldwide, today announced its latest round of investments, CryptoSlate announced.
Invest in Ethereum
Seven technology companies in six countries around the world, including Kenya, Argentina, India, Mexico, Rwanda, and Nepal, are recipients. Each company receives up to $ 100,000 in seed funding, with five companies choosing to get a portion of that in Ethereum.
“Supporting women-run businesses is ‘smart investing’ and is more important than ever as we accelerate our efforts to support underrepresented communities. We are delighted that this new investment cohort is made up of a strong group of companies, the majority of which are run by women, ”said UNICEF Ventures Lead Sunita Grote in a statement.
She added, “COVID-19 has impacted children and their communities, and many around the world will continue to have a significant impact on their lives. We can see the importance of inclusive and affordable digital solutions, including those that provide access to financial systems and services. ”
Digital public goods are needed to solve the challenges children face today. UNICEF supports start-ups in the development and testing of new open source solutions and in the use of frontier technologies.
The majority of startups are developing avenues towards financial inclusion – decentralized decision-making tools, loan and investment services for unserved communities, and remittances and community currencies – given the economic hardship of COVID-19 and the escalating impact on education, social protection and health care.
Who gets what and where?
The UNICEF Venture Fund invests in the following companies, five of which are women-led teams:
Xcapit, a company in Argentina, is developing a gamified savings application. Their solution enables low- and low-middle-income families to improve their economic situation through easy access to financial services.
Somish Blockchain Labs, a company in India, is working on a decentralized governance protocol with a flexible toolkit for governance models for decentralized applications (dApps). The product, called GovBlocks, essentially creates decision-making structures for decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) and enables the study of how communities can be involved in decision-making. You are one of five women-led startups in the cohort.
BX Smart Labs, a company in Mexico, is developing a decentralized app for saving circles. Savings trips run by small groups of relatives, friends, or neighbors are a common practice around the world, providing opportunities for people to borrow and save even if they don’t have access to traditional bank and credit card accounts. You are one of five women-led startups in the cohort.
Leaf Global Fintech, a Rwandan company, is creating a lending platform and virtual bank. You’re working on a low-tech solution to give people without internet access new ways to connect to banks and other roadblocks. Over 6,000 transactions have already taken place on the platform. You are one of five women-led startups in the cohort.
Rumsan, a company in Nepal, is developing a Digital Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) management system that uses mobile-based blockchain tokens to ensure faster money transfers to beneficiaries, even in the most inaccessible areas. You are one of five women-led startups in the cohort.
Grassroots Economics, a company in Kenya, is developing a digital token platform. It is an open source pan-African response and recovery aid platform that enables aid workers and fragile communities to receive payments digitally, create and trade digital tokens, remotely track KPIs, and access risk communications.
KotaniPay, another company in Kenya, is developing a platform for wire transfers, savings, withdrawals, loans and payments. It serves as a smooth bridge between cryptocurrency and fiat currencies and allows users to access the blockchain via USD.
