Cristiano Ronaldo became the first soccer player to be rewarded for his career successes in cryptocurrency after FC Juventus. Star received 770 JUV tokens – one for each career goal achieved, as reported by the Spanish outlet Marca.
JUV is the official Juventus fan token that was introduced in 2019 by the Italian football club in the Blockchain Chiliz (CHZ) in connection with the Socios.com platform. Fan tokens give club fans the opportunity to vote on club decisions and at the same time get access to various perks, competitions and prizes.
The 770 JUV token bounty awarded to Ronaldo ahead of Sunday’s league game against Benevento is around $ 11,750, based on the current token price of $ 15.26. The JUV token originally had a price of $ 2 when it launched.
While the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star is unlikely to need the money anytime soon, it does mean that it was the first time a football player was given cryptocurrency as a career achievement award. The growing connection between sports and cryptocurrency has led several clubs to flirt with the idea of paying players either in whole or in part in cryptocurrency for some time.
Dozens of soccer teams have issued fan tokens to the Chiliz blockchain since its inception, including some of the biggest teams from the world’s biggest leagues, such as Manchester City, FC. Barcelona and Paris St. Germain.
The value of the Chiliz born player CHZ has responded to the numerous activities recently initiated by various soccer teams. Since January 1 alone, CHZ’s dollar value has surged over 2,500% while its market cap rose from $ 100 million to $ 4.5 billion before falling back to $ 3.2 billion.
Could Cristiano Ronaldo’s longtime rival Lionel Messi soon be eligible for his own crypto rewards given the Barcelona self-issued fan tokens (BAR)? The Argentine superstar has already scored 734 senior goals for Ronaldo’s 770 but is two years younger.
